How Do You Monitor Food Intake for Diabetic Children?

How Do You Monitor Food Intake for Diabetic Children?

I speak to many teachers and I hear regularly how many of their students appear to be walking zombies throughout the school day.  It is tragic to listen while the teachers attempt to reach their students.  They have tried everything - talking to the student, changing their seating, having them stand up, and encourage them to engage in the discussion of the day.    When students are impacted by the a low blood glucose level it really is like they are in a coma.  These students, when they are functioning are usually really bright and pleasant children.  Unless they become hyperglycemic and become very jittery.  All they want to do is learn and the teachers really want to reach them.

What can be done to help these students receive the education they deserve?

Children with diabetes must carefully balance their food intake and their exercise to regulate their blood sugar levels, in an attempt to avoid hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) or hyperglycemic (high blood sugar) reactions, which can be life threatening.

Here are some tips:
  • keep snacks nearby
  • have students eat a healthy snack at least every 2 hours
  • get regular sleep
  • consume the correct amount of water
  • help student eat more vegetable and less starch/breads
Thes tips will help your student achieve a more successful experience in school.

My Child Has Diabetes - Creating a Support System

How do you help children and their families understand and cope with Diabetes?  Help create a support system with and for them.  Simple things like a birthday party can become a nightmare for children.  Here are some tips you can remember to ensure that a child with Diabetes feels as normal and accepted as possible.

  • Check at school with the teacher to find out if there are any diabetic children before bringing sugary cupcakes or snacks - you can substitute applesauce for sugar when baking.....
  • Bring diabetic friendly snacks (i.e.veggies, fresh fruit, lower glycemic foods)  We could all benefit from watching our sugar intake.
  • Offer to share with the class a presentation about diabetes to help all the children understand more about living with the disease, that it is not contagious, how it impacts diet, etc.

Families with Children Who Have Diabetes - Now What?

In a recent post, I announced the Educational Outreach Campaign for families with Diabetic children.  The outpouring support was amazing.  At the same time it was alarming to learn how many famillies are impacted by Diabetes and so many people wondering what that means.  The next several posts be dedicated to answering many of those questions to help more of us learn about those who live with Diabetes.

The Juvenline Diabetes Research Foundation cautions that it takes time to adapt ot the day-to-day demands of the disease.  As treatment options continue to improve, your child is able to live a full and active life. There is a great deal of information to process and as each family member gains more knowledge and confidence in living with Diabetes, they will be more able to move away from the intense feelings common after diagnosis.

In my practice with Metabolic Health, the most successful weight loss patients are those with a support system that provides encouragement, empowering acceptance.  Frequently, the whole support system takes on the new lifestyle.   The same is true to a child with Diabetes - the stronger the support system, the more "normal" the child's life feels.

Do you know a family who has been impacted with Diabetes?  Have you wondered how you can help?
Here's how:

1. Support our Works of Mercy Campaign to provide education and nutrition to families with Diabetic children.

2. Recognize they want to be as normal as possible and recommend them to receive educational support.

Send an email to Dr Eileen Silva to get started.
