How Do You Monitor Food Intake for Diabetic Children?
I speak to many teachers and I hear regularly how many of their students appear to be walking zombies throughout the school day. It is tragic to listen while the teachers attempt to reach their students. They have tried everything - talking to the student, changing their seating, having them stand up, and encourage them to engage in the discussion of the day. When students are impacted by the a low blood glucose level it really is like they are in a coma. These students, when they are functioning are usually really bright and pleasant children. Unless they become hyperglycemic and become very jittery. All they want to do is learn and the teachers really want to reach them.
What can be done to help these students receive the education they deserve?
Children with diabetes must carefully balance their food intake and their exercise to regulate their blood sugar levels, in an attempt to avoid hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) or hyperglycemic (high blood sugar) reactions, which can be life threatening.
Here are some tips:
- keep snacks nearby
- have students eat a healthy snack at least every 2 hours
- get regular sleep
- consume the correct amount of water
- help student eat more vegetable and less starch/breads
