Children and Diabetes - Stress

Illness and stress, often cause blood sugar levels to rise which can dramatically impact children with Type 1 diabetes. If your child doesn't feel well, that can impact their ability to keep up with schoolwork both at school and at home. It can be very hard to concentrate or be able to remember.  As parents and teachers, we can help reduce stress by offering to:
  •  provide extra time for students answer questions on tests or other work.
  •  being more patient as the student works to understand new ideas and concepts.
  •  reassure students that they are not holding themselves or anyone back by having diabetes.
As children age they may temporarily be at the "perfect balance" of insulin and food intake for a while, however that can fluctuate. Life can be close to normal for during that time. Then something as simple as a growth spurt or a stressful event could suddenly throw everything off.  Early adolescence is an especially difficult time: hormones begin to turn boys and girls into men and women. Children may have more issues with blood sugar at this time and require more help emotionally and physically, both at home and at school.  Watch closely their stress levels as that can impact their immune system and make them more suseptible to other diseases.

Children and Diabetes - Help us Educate Families

I know that if you are like me your heart is broken by sight of suffering children...especially if there is something that we can do to make a difference.

Living with Diabetes


One of the most frequent questions I receive is about Diabetes, like how to eat, how to cope, and what about the sugars? Here are some basic guidelines from a holistic and natural point of view.

Eat Better, Feel Better

Having been a metabolic weight control specialist for over 22 years, the weight issue is critical with type 2 diabetes particularly, because diabetes is the most age-accelerating disease. I would also point out that it hastens the onset of degenerative issues. Two main arenas for management and prevention of Diabetes are what we eat and what we do.

Nutrient Dense vs. Calorie Dense


Food is critical for Diabetics. However, most medical doctors will not have the specialization in nutrition to be able to offer sound advice relating to what you eat. Below are some of the highlights of what I cover with my patients.
  • Drink water over carbonated beverages
  • Choose whole grains over processed grains. (stay away from the boxed foods)
  • Cook with leaner cuts of meat
  • Eat fruits/veggies over chips or packaged snacks.
  • Let your portion size match your activity levels.
  • Choose lower glycemic foods over higher glycemic foods - link for chart

Active Dense vs. Activity Dense

In addition to focusing on our food intake, it is equally as important to look at our activities. We all know the importance of exercise and GETTING THE WEIGHT OFF! Here are a few other tips to help in prevention and management of Diabetes.
  • Find a good cause to focus on you will find your own problems become less stressful
  • Being physically active allows you to feel more in charge of your health
  • Parking further away, taking stairs over the elevator are excellent ways to reduce your risks for heart diseases and complications from diabetes
  • Increasing your time moving (i.e., walking, biking, climbing stairs, swimming, dancing, house cleaning, etc.) will help your keep your circulation strong and reduce your weight as well!
  • Keep a journal with your activities, starting with measuring your Body Mass Indicator (BMI) and monitor it monthly along with measuring waist and hips.
If You Have Diabetes...You still have the choice to manage the disease or let the disease manage you.
